Close-up review of a credit report with charts and planning notes

Studies keep finding the same thing our auditors see daily: a meaningful share of reports contains an error. Most fall into five buckets — and four of them are very winnable once documented.

1. Duplicate collections

One debt, two (or three) entries — the original creditor plus each agency it passed through. You owe once; your report should show it once.

2. Wrong balances and limits

Paid-down balances that never updated, or limits reported lower than reality. Both inflate your utilization and quietly tax your score every month they sit wrong.

3. Stale late payments

Lates older than seven years should be gone. So should “30 days late” remarks from accounts you've since brought current and kept clean — they can often be goodwill-removed.

4. Mixed files and wrong personal data

Someone else's accounts, misspelled names, addresses you've never lived at. These signal a mixed file and need identity evidence attached to the dispute.

5. Zombie inquiries and accounts

Hard inquiries you never authorized, or closed accounts reporting as open with balances. Both are dispute-ready with a paper trail.
